SAN ANTONIO (AP)Back in the U.S. with a gleaming bronze medal in hand, Becky Hammon said the controversy surrounding her decision to play basketball for Russia in Beijing has given her fresh perspective on life and humbled her.
She also said the medal, which she compared to a gigantic penny, was a bonus to a long personal journey.
This is the game and I think its important to keep perspective, said Hammon, back at practice with the WNBAs San Antonio Silver Stars on Tuesday. And if this is the toughest thing I have to face in life I think Ill have a very easy life. Theres bound to be more peaks and valleys along the way and but I think this has helped prepare me for those peaks and valleys that Ill face further in life.
Hammon, last seasons WNBA MVP runner-up, was essentially passed over for the U.S. team earlier this year. So the 31-year-old point guard, who plays for a Russian club team during the winter, became a naturalized Russian citizen.
The decision became a hot topic, with critics calling the South Dakota native a turncoat and supporters countering that she had a right to do whatever it took to play in the Olympics.
My goal in all this was never to get the approval of everybody, Hammon said. I think its very easy for a lot of people to sit back and say, I would have done this or I would have done that. I think if you went and asked people, a bunch of my peers, if theyd do the same thing, I think a lot of them would say yes.
Russia was eliminated by the U.S.which went on to win Olympic goldin the semifinals.
Hammon scored just three points in that loss, but she had a team-high 22 points in Russias 94-81 bronze-medal win over host China.
The medal will collect dust just like any other piece of hardware, Hammon said. s about the journey that youve gone on. For me the medal was nice, and like I said it was unbelievable just to be on that podium, but its been about the journey to get there.
Hammon said people asked her why, while playing for Russia, she still put her hand over her heart while The Star-Spangled Banner was played.
Well, people, because Im still American, Hammon said. I love my country, I love what we stand for. I dont know how many times I have to say that. People keep asking me that. I mean, Ill live the rest of my life here. And the fortunate thing for me is that I know where I came from and I know where Im going, which is, I think when you know that and you understand that you can pretty much take on anything.
Hammon singled out a couple of factors that she said made her decision to play for Russia garner so much attention. She said a lot of people wondered why she wasnt on the U.S. team in the first place.
I dont think anybody would have cared if I was the 12th player on the bench, Hammon said. I think a lot of people thought I deserved to be on USA Basketball.
Hammon is also from the U.S. heartlandpeople think Im apple pie and hot dogs and hamburgers and cheeseburgers on the Fourth of Julybut played for Americas one-time Cold War enemy.
But she said her situation is far from unique.
Our coaches go and coach over in other countries for the Olympics. Athletes go over to other countries. The narrator, who is the ships second mate, is aboard one of the fast clipper-ships running between London and Melbourne at the time of the big gold finds up at Bendigo. The captain, named Reynolds, complains to him of a strange whispering in his cabin, and asks if the second mate will trade cabins with him. The previous captain, Captain Avery, had previously died in the room, of no known cause. Although the second mate agrees to the switch, believing the captains concern to be nonsense, in a few nights he is hearing a mysterious whispering as well. The ship carries a very valuable cargo of gold bullion, so the mate gives orders to open and examine the special compartment holding the gold, which is positioned just below the captains cabin in the lazarette. He awakens the captain, and they enter the lazarette and examine the compartment. The whispering can clearly be heard, but again the source of it cannot be found. The second made and captain open the sealed room, and find that the thirteenth of the sixty chests is missing! However, when the captain leaves and returns with the purser, and they examine the chests again, they are all present and accounted for. No explanation can be found.
A round-the-clock guard is set up. The three officers (the captain and the two mates) take turns sleeping inside the bullion compartment itself, locked in with the gold, while the petty officers keep watch, pacing around the bullion compartment twenty-four hours a day. The guard inside the room is is woken every hour to confirm that the chests are all there. When it is time for the narrator to stand guard, he awakens groggily to discover that a number of chests are missing, but believes that he must be dreaming. After the ship docks in London, bank officials come on board to remove the gold. When the bullion is removed, all seems in order, until the bank reports that all of the chests actually contain lead! As additional cargo is unloaded, an especially heavy case arouses the second mates suspicion, and he has the man operating the crane drop a case. It bursts open, and chests of gold bullion are found. An elaborate plot is revealed, in which conspirators brought aboard identical chests containing lead, stored in other cargo; the special compartment to hold the bullion was built with a sliding door and connection to a secret passage. In the dead of night the thieves gradually swapped the chests. To avoid detection by the guard inside the compartment they used a narcotic gas. Too low a dose allowed the second mate to awaken and see the chests missing; but too high a dose killed the first mate. The same narcotic gas evidently killed the previous captain, who was gassed to keep him from learning too much about the theft going on directly beneath his cabin.

These 11 buttons are customizable for any and all of your programs! (For example you could easily set the search button to perform copy in notepad, paste in mspaint, and search in internet explorer). It's perfect for designers, as you can customize mouse click shortcuts for common commands.

The SetPoint software that comes with it is easy to navigate so that you can customize the 11 buttons you have at your disposal to perform clicks, keystrokes, or hotkeys (IE ctrl+c, atl+tab, etc). Please note that there is an "uber-options" third party software available that is better, but if you don't want to get it, it's not a necessity.

I have had no range or battery issues. I use it heavily 8 hours a day at work and 1-2 hours at home, roughly 4 feet away from the USB dongle. It never lags and I charge it once a week.

I disagree with just about all the cons that I see others have had. The battery life is fine, the range is great, I have not once had the cursor skip or lag (and I've used it with games), the software is good, I don't "accidentally" hit buttons, AND it works on my XP workstation and my Vista laptop.

The ONLY complaint I have is that the thumb wheel could have a bit more "sandpaper" grip to it. I have my thumbwheel programmed to toggle ortho, move, and create polygon for AutoCAD, so I use it a lot and it gets slippery.

Other Thoughts: Combined with autohotkey (a freeware hotkey script creator) and to some degree the uber options SetPoint replacement software, this mouse is absolutely indispensable at work if you are a power user who wants to optimize your work time. If you work at a computer 40hrs a week, I'm sure you can come up with at least 5 repetitive keyboard tasks you perform. With this mouse (and an autohotkey script) you could simplify those 5 text strings into button clicks, plus have room for 4 more. (That's a total of 9 programmable strings per program - I'm not counting right and left click).

This mouse is a HUGE potential upgrade for your workstation. Don't doubt it, add it to your cart.

WORTH OWNING; DON'T LOSE IT LIKE ME
I used to drag with me everywhere this cable which connects the Nikon D40 camera (not listed in the product description) to the computer for downloading files, continually reminding myself (in the time before discovering SD card readers) never to lose this cable.

I actually find this cable quicker than the readers. I also have yet to find a reader durable enough to let out of the house. I keep one in the ashtray of my pick-up (only thing it ever gets used for: loose change for the kids, a few Mass Cards, and an SD reader, no ashes) where it won't get injured but be at hand (of course once the summer heat hits, we'll see if it melts). In fact my small truck provides the most secure camera bag I have ever had. Take my life but not my truck, please.

But I like this cable. Even if you have not lost yours, order an extra just in case. It's cheap and it's good and it is very useful.

And did I tell you I find it quicker than the readers, and easier to use. I hate swapping out the SD card like that, and remembering which way is up, and trying to get the computer to see the reader, having found room to squeeze it in on some public computer. With this cable, no problem.

Keep this cable in your kit, with the extra UV filter and stuff (an extra battery is also very good to have). Don't lose it. It's worth it.
